55 People Arrested in Afrin during June 2021

The Military Police arrested 49 men, 4 children and 2 women — only one detainee was released

Syria’s Kurdish-majority district of Afrin saw an increase in arrests in June 2021. STJ documented 55 cases of detentions against civilians, among them four children and two women, conducted by the opposition’s Syrian National Army (SNA), supported by Turkey. Only one of the detainees was released, the fate of the other 54 remaining unknown as of the completion of this report on 5 June 2021.

As of the end of June, 289 people have been arrested in Afrin in 2021. Only 76 detainees have been released. STJ obtained these numbers from its researchers in the area as well as from witnesses, relatives of the detainees and sources from within the SNA itself.

Arrests in Afrin

Afrin district witnessed the arrests of six people, among them a woman and two children, by the Military Police.

  1. Zakaria Diab Safar, 28, was arrested on 8 June from the village of Akbiya by members of the Military Police, on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.
  2. Hanan Manan Battal, 15, was arrested on 17 June from the city of Afrin by members of the Military Police, on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.
  3. Manan Manan Battal, 14, was arrested on 17 June from the city of Afrin by members of the Military Police, on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.
  4. Hussein Kalou was arrested on 17 June from the city of Afrin by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.
  5. Jihan Muhammed Olachli was arrested on 17 June from the city of Afrin by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. Her fate remains unknown.
  6. Zeinab Abdin Olashli was arrested on 17 June from the city of Afrin by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. Her fate remains unknown.

Arrests in Rajo District

Rajo district witnessed the arrests of 18 people by the Military Police. None of them were released.

  1. Masoud Ahmed Othman was arrested on 1 June from the village of Haj Khalil by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.

  3. Hassan Horo Hamid, 40, was arrested on 7 June, from the village of Bilbilko‏ by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.
  4. Faisal Rashid was arrested on 7 June from the village of Haj Khalil by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.
  5. Mohi El-Din Abdullah Daoud, 35, was arrested on 13 June from the village of Atmana by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.
  6. Zakaria Khello was arrested on 16 June from the village of Haj Khalil by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.
  7. Othman Zakaria Khallo was arrested on 16 June from the village of Haj Khalil by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.
  8. Khalil Ali Hamza was arrested on 19 June from the city of Rajo by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.
  9. Hozan Muhammad Tobo, 32, was arrested on 21 June from the village Qareh Baba by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.
  10. Fahim Nazmi Hassan was arrested on 28 June from the village of Hasan Kalkawi by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.
  11. Izzat Hameed Hassan was arrested on 28 June from the village of Hasan Kalkawi by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate is still unknown.

Shaykh Al-Hadid District witnessed the arrests of seven people by the Military Police. None of them were released.

Bulbul district witnessed the arrest of two men, both of whom remain detained.

  1. Ahmed Ibrahim Muhammad, 35 years old, was arrested on 15 June from the village of Khalilaka in Bulbul district by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.
  2. Rasheed Kakaj Muhammad was arrested on 28 June from the village of Qizilbash in Bulbul district by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.

Arrests in Sharran District

Sharran district witnessed the arrest of two men. One of them was released.

  1. Housni Muhammad Sheikh Muhammad was arrested on 15 June from the village of Midankey in Sharran district by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. He was later released.
  2. Muhammad Rashou was arrested on 29 June from the village of Darwish in Sharran district by members of the Military Police on charges of having links with the Autonomous Administration. His fate remains unknown.

Arrests in Maabatli/Mabeta District

Maabatli/Mabeta district witnessed the arrest of three people, including two children, by the Military Police. None were released.
